چکیده

Many industrial experiments involve some factors whose levels are harder to set than others. The best way to deal with these is to plan the experiment carefully as a split-plot, or more generally a multi-stratum, design. Several different approaches for constructing splitplot type response surface designs have been proposed in the literature since 2001, which has allowed experimenters to make better use of their resources by using more efficient designs than the classical balanced ones. One of these approaches, the stratum-by-stratum strategy, has been shown to produce designs that are less efficient than locally D-optimal designs. An improved stratum-by-stratum algorithm is given, which, though more computationally intensive than the old one, makes better use of the advantages of this approach, i.e. it can be used for any structure and does not depend on prior estimates of the variance components. This is shown to be almost as good as the locally optimal designs in terms of their own criteria and more robust across a range of criteria. Supplementary material is available online.

Whole-Plot Exchange Algorithms for Constructing D-Optimal Multistratum Designs

Multistratum experiments contain several different sizes of experimental units. Examples include split-plot, strip-plot designs, and randomized block designs. We propose a strategy for constructing a D-optimal multistratum design by improving a randomly generated design through a sequence of whole-plot exchanges. This approach preserves the design structure and simplifies updates to the informa...

Multistratum Fractional Factorial Designs

Recent work on multistratum fractional factorial designs is set in a general and unified framework, and a criterion for selecting multistratum fractional factorial designs that takes stratum variances into account is proposed. Application of the general theory is illustrated on designs of experiments with multiple processing stages, including split-lot designs, blocked strip-plot designs, and p...

Split-plot Designs with Mirror Image Pairs as Sub-plots

In this article we investigate two-level split-plot designs where the sub-plots consist of only two mirror image trials. Assuming third and higher order interactions negligible, we show that these designs divide the estimated effects into two orthogonal sub-spaces, separating sub-plot main effects and sub-plot by whole-plot interactions from the rest. Further we show how to construct split-plot...

Incorporating Cost and Optimizing Central Composite Designs for Split - Plot Response Surface Methodology Experiments

Complete randomization in many industrial and agricultural experiments is frequently impractical due to constraints in time, cost or existence of one or more hard-to-change factors. In these situations, restrictions on randomization lead to split-plot designs (SPD), allowing certain factor levels to be randomly applied to the whole plot units and remaining factor levels randomly to the subplot ...

An Algorithm for Finding D-e cient Equivalent-Estimation Second-Order Split-Plot Designs

Many industrial experiments involve restricted rather than complete randomization. This often leads to the use of split-plot designs, which limit the number of independent settings of some of the experimental factors. These factors, named whole-plot factors, are often, in some way, hard to change. The remaining factors, called sub-plot factors, are easier to change. Their levels are therefore i...
